Nowadays modern technologies are coming into our everyday life more and more, and the education is not an exception. In order to make mathematical courses more attractive to engineering students and to bring new technology to the classroom the Department of Engineering Mathematics of Riga Technical University came up with the initiative to change the way mathematics is taught at RTU. The teaching model of mathematics at the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology was changed eight years ago. In particular, the software package MATHEMATICA is used to teach mathematics to students. All mathematical stuff considered at lectures and practice, is also considered at labs, using the package MATHEMATICA. Students learn the basic commands of MATHEMATICA so that they are able to solve equations and systems of equations, to perform operations with matrixes and vectors, to calculate limits, derivatives and integrals, to solve differential equations and so on. The results of the student-opinion poll show that student treat this introduction of labs into the teaching of mathematics well. Moreover, they readily use the package MATHEMATICA not only in the course of “High Mathematics”, but also in other subjects connected with mathematics.
