Although the photoluminescence (PL) maximum is shifted to a smaller wavelength if the diameter of Si nanocrystals (Si-nc) decreases (blueshift), Rama Krishna and Friesner (1992) have shown theoretically that it does not hold for the Γ-point. An anomalous redshift exists there. After 20 years this phenomenon has been verified experimentally by Yassievich a. o. Nonetheless, we have found that the existing microscopic explanation is unsatisfactory, and here we propose a scenario that elucidates this phenomenon.
