The dominance of building spatial composition in the Courland Bishopric and the Livonia cities such as Golding (modern Kuldīga), Hasenpot (modern Aizpute), Winda (modern Ventspils) and Pilten (modern Piltene) was a fortress with a chapel or Bishops’ Association building. Reformation promoted the appearance of new building types. Lutheranism was manifested as the official religion in the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia. Understanding of the city architectonic spatial planning changed – construction of centres was formed around the church.
