The quality of the urban environment is increasingly recognized to be a key ingredient of the economic regeneration of cities. Urban public open space can help to constitute a framework where urban society and culture can develop, and to increase identity and a sense of community. In large housing estates it is an environment where everyone expands their sense of a home, through daily activities transferring it from their dwellings to public open spaces. Today large-scale housing estates are considered to be a serious problem involving spatial, social and economic issues with technical, aesthetic and social aspects. The renewal of urban areas by development of public open spaces increases the overall quality of life and helps to reduce social exclusion.
