Materials in Nowaday Jewellery in Latvia

For storage of information on nowaday Latvian jewellery, database used in Internet is developed. There photos of jewellery, information on jewellery and jewellery authors are gathered. In database, beside the other information data on materials used in jewellery during the last 10 years are stored. Information on jewellery materials is summarized in five subgroups - “Metal”, ”Semiprecious stones, precious stones, stones”, “Natural materials”, “Glass”, “Other materials”. From the analysis of information stored in database, it can be seen that in the last decade, silver is the most popular metal in the making of jewellery, which is used in 46% of instances. Assortment of used semiprecious stones, precious stones and stones is large, altogether 58 types – pearl is the most popular of semiprecious stones, Baltic amber is second most popular, which is used in 9% of instances. Baltic amber is also semiprecious stone that can be found on shore of the Baltic Sea in the territory of Latvia. Wood is the most popular out of natural materials, which are used in 28% of instances, but also shells of ostrich eggs, caps of acorns and other materials are used. In making of jewellery, glass also is used; the style created by the authors of jewellery themselves is the most popular.
