Tradition Versus Modernity in Regional Architecture
Riga Technical University 54th International Scientific Conference 2013
Ilze Miķelsone

In the face of hegemonic universal values and sweep of neoliberal thinking, pressure on "local and global" coexistence becomes topical discussion. Buildings rooted in the local context, linked to the local traditions and blessed with contemporary architecture concepts [4] pretend to be the future challenge of sustainable urbanism. This paper is attempt to analyze delusion of comparative ideologies and belief systems in the concept of "glocalism" and is based in two arguments. First is lays in discourse of Critical Regionalism as a theory from 80-ties of 20th century. Second lays in the concept in RIBA policy for architecture schools "to either declare their ideological position or accept a wide range of architectural approaches". Considering versions of glocalism as challenging and rising ideology to clarify, three theoretical topics are deconstructed as relevant to contemporary regionalism, - vernacular, traditional and modern. The author applies closer inspection on these concepts in the local perspective, as cases studies of private developments in suburbs of Riga.
