One of influencing factors on maximal transmission distance of fiber optical transmission system is chromatic dispersion (CD). Performance and maximal available optical transmission distance of four level pulse amplitude modulated (4-PAM) optical access system depends on the implemented dispersion compensation method, its use and compensation scheme (location of dispersion compensation module in optical distribution network). Generation of 20 Gbaud 4-PAM signal (40 Gbit/s) in electrical path is realized by summing two 20 Gbit/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) coded bit stream signals, that double data rate and provide higher spectral efficiency of optical transmission system. If compared to NRZ, 4-PAM modulation format is more spectral efficient and can provide higher data rate in limited bandwidth, that is especially important in cost sensitive optical access networks. This paper contains the investigation of 4-PAM modulated 4-channel dense wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (DWDM-PON) transmission system with efficient chromatic dispersion (CD) pre-compensation and post-compensation methods, e.g., fiber Bragg grating (FBG). In order to obtain the maximum transmission distance and high system performance, in addition to the implementation of dispersion compensation, in our research an erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) will be used, that will compensate insertion loss of optical transmission line elements, in the same time providing sufficient input power on the receiver photodiode (PD). Minimal channel spacing of investigated 4-channel DWDM-PON system is found 43.75 GHz, where different optical fiber types with different chromatic dispersion coefficients are used and compared in terms of received signal bit error ratio (BER). Investigated transmission fibers are single-mode optical fiber (SMF) and non-zero dispersion-shifted single-mode optical fiber (NZDSF), which are widely deployed optical fibers in commercial networks.
