Linen textiles appear to be some of the oldest in the world. Nowadays flax fibres return back to fashion industry thanks to freshness, comfort, innovative technologies providing the elegance and demand for linen clothing. Direct dyes are popular for dyeing of cellulosic fibres due to their price and easy use. As the first synthetic dyes they are currently used for dyeing of textile materials in order to repair and consolidate the threads in restoration. Unfortunately, these dyes have only moderate dye fastness properties. Many studies have been devoted to improvement of substantivity of anionic direct dyes for cellulosic materials. In most cases they are expensive and technologically complicated. The presented study is devoted to examination of the influence to colour properties of the fabric dyed with direct dyes in case when linen fabric is modified by alkali and enzyme BEISOL PRO treatment. To evaluate the fabric modification effect the colour characteristics before and after light test are used, and the fastness to rubbing as well as mechanical properties are determined. The colour characteristics of dyed fabrics and the fastness to rubbing differ depending on used dye. The wet fastness to rubbing is lower than dry. The tensile strength and elongation in warp direction in all cases is superior and is not dependent on used dye. The influence of modification type is not significant on fabric light resistance.
