The Effect of Cotton Pads Impregnated with Amber Suspension on Collagen and Elastin

The unique biological properties of amber are well known, still there are not many studies related to amber influence on cells. The effect of cotton pads impregnated with amber suspension on collagen and elastin concentration in cells was investigated. Collagen and elastin are fibrous proteins which form basis of connective tissue. These proteins are present in the skin, ligaments, tendons, bones, cartilage, blood vessel walls etc. Both of these proteins in tissues work in partnership: collagen gives strength and stretch and elastin gives elasticity, recoil function while stretching (vessels, ligaments, tendons) and contraction (muscle tissue). In aging process, collagen and elastin fibers degrade and their synthesis decreases. This can cause aging of the skin and of the whole organism, because these proteins lose their tissue supporting function. We have proved that stimulating effect on the growth of collagen (type I and type III) can be achieved by using cotton pads impregnated with preparations containing water-based amber powder suspension. It is very important, because unlike polar solvent-based extracts, which can cause skin irritation or sensitization of organism, but our developed material containing amber powder water-based suspension have not caused any of these side effects. Moreover, the highest stimulation effect showed cotton pads, impregnated with preparation (5% APS), based on pure amber powder suspension, with no additional components. This discovery can serve in further development as a base to create new anti-aging biotextile materials for skin rejuvenation.
