Development of a Measurement System for Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless Networks Performance Parameters

The aim of the research is to develop a system for evaluation of heterogeneous wireless networks’ performance parameters (network/services delay) in testbed environment. Two different approaches are used. The first method of research is IP SLA measurements for static client: icmp-echo (response time computation), udp-jitter (one-way delay), DHCP RTT (round-trip time) (to obtain the lease from server), packet loss, packet ordering, FTP get (the time it takes to transfer fixed size file from a remote host to the router). The main conclusions are: IP SLA supported devices and time synchronization is needed for OWD (one way delay) measurements; measurement accuracy is 10^-3 s. The second method of research is one-way delay measurements using tcpdump utility. The main conclusions are: time synchronization is needed for OWD measurements; measurement accuracy is 10^-9 s. To meet the evolving needs for telecommunication services of performance and mobility, it is necessary to ensure required QoS and performance parameters (delay or latency) in communication networks. To obtain high precision measurement results of RTT and especially of OWD, the time synchronization in the measurement system is needed. It is necessary to supplement measurement system with GPS equipment.
