Researches on risk handling have become very intensive in recent years. However, there is still a lack of precise and unambiguous definitions of both terms - risk and uncertainty since it is hard to understand the nature of these terms within systems with certain conditions. This paper is the first run in defining uncertainty and risk and providing a strong distinction between them. This position is accumulated while considering various references, and can be accepted as universal risk/uncertainty explanation for most cases. However, the main concern within the current paper is considering the uncertain environment and corresponding risks in supply chains. In this context, the robust planning approach is mentioned as an encouraging approach to effective supply chain management under uncertainty and risks.
