Our investigations were devoted to elaboration of composition and production technology of biodegradable chain lubricant based on vegetable oils. We explored as base fluids rapeseed and hempseed oils produced in Latvia; different additives improving kinematic viscosity and oxidative stability as well as tackifiers, pour point depressants, detergents and emulsifiers were added when necessary. The best compositions contain at least 95% of neat rapeseed oil, up to 2-5% of additives - mainly natural caoutchouc together with colophony, Lubrizol 7671A. Several compositions were successfully tested by saw operators in the forest.
