The quality of surfaces is of high importance for modern manufacturing due to the necessity to fulfill the machined parts' requirements. Surface texture parameters influence a wide range of functional properties of the substrate surfaces, including physical, chemical, electrical, magnetic, mechanical, wear-resistant, and corrosion-resistant properties. This paper is devoted to the review and analysis of the surface texture parameters and characterization and the differences of the 3D surface texture parameters from the 2D parameters and the advantages thereof. Moreover, the possibilities of a broader application of the 3D surface texture parameters are offered. For instance, using the texture parameters in the engineering calculations for cylindrical parts set by interference fit is proposed.
