Conflicting Tendencies in the Development of Technical Vocabulary
Collection "Terminologica" 2018
Larisa Iļinska, Tatjana Smirnova, Marina Platonova

The article discusses two evident conflicting tendencies in the development of technical language : metaphorization and formalization. Metaphoric meaning extension is characteristic of technical language. At the same time, contemporary development of terminography and computer linguistics facilitates formalization and alignment of terms in multilingual databases and machine translation software. The article mainly studies coinage and application of metaphoric terms in scientific and technical discourse. Observations are made on the basis of extensive empirical research. The complicated mech-anisms underlying the processes of meaning formation and extension are illustrated in the article considering terms from the field of Civil Engineering and Architecture. The challenges associated with decoding of meaning of metaphoric terms are most apparent when these terms should be aligned and standardized across the languages in multilingual databases. The results of contrastive analysis conducted in the article may be used in the development of harmonized multilingual terminographic resources in compliance with the national and international standards.
