This research is devoted to the concept of Super-PON architecture as a promising solution for scaling reach and customer aggregation of PONs, which is currently going through the process of standardization. Super-PON is a PON optical layer thatcanextend the optical reach from 20 km to up to 50 km and support the increased customer coverage of up to 1024 customers per single-mode optical fiber.Applying wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), wavelength routing, andoptical amplificationallows toconsolidate active equipment which leads to reduction of central offices (COs) and consequently lower capital expenditures as well as operating costs. In this paper, authors demonstrate the realization and evaluate the performance of 10 Gbit/s 16-channel WDM passive optical network (WDM-PON) operating in L-band with the 100 GHz nominal channel spacing using ITU-T G.652 single-mode fiber (SMF) and ITU-T G.655 non-zero dispersion-shifted fiber (NZDSF)as a transmission media. As a key aspect, the authors also demonstrate the usage of four-wave mixing (FWM) nonlinear optical effect-based optical frequency comb (OFC) light source for further Super-PON optimization and reductionof operating expenses (OPEX).FWM is one of the well-known nonlinear optical effects (NOE) that affects the quality of the fiber optical communication lines, but it can be also used for the generation of a multi-wavelength optical source with cascaded FWM products. This FWM-based OFC source is located in the central office (CO), where it is demonstrated that it is capable to generate up to 16 new carriers by employ only two high power pump lasers and a highly nonlinear optical fiber (HNLF) span instead of 16 separate lasers, which would be necessary. The investigated transmission system was designed and evaluated within the Synopsys OptSim simulation software environment.
