XRD and SEM Investigations of Structural Changes of Alkali Treated 2:1 Clay

This study investigates structural changes of illite by high concentration alkaline treatment. Source of illite fractioned clay from Kuprava pit (Latvia). Alkaline treatment was done on calcined illite using NaOH solutions with concentration of 6M, 8M and 10M, with following curing process at 120°C or 600°C and alkaline-hydrothermal method at 180°C for 24h was also tried. Structure and morphology of raw and syntesized materials was investigated by SEM (Nova NanoSEM 650, The Netherlands) and XRD (model D8 Advance, Bruker, with CuKα radiation in a scanning interval of 2θ =10–60° at a speed of 4°/ min).
