Performance Analysis of Hybrid Raman-EDFA Amplifier in WDM Transmission Systems

Modern Fiber Optic Transmission Systems (FOTS) have optical signal amplifiers as an integral part. There are two main types: Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs) and Raman Fiber Amplifiers (RFAs). Raman amplifiers RFAs based on dispersion-compensating fiber (DCF) have potential application in future long-haul high-capacity optical communication systems due to the fact that chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation and insertion loss in trans-mission system link section can be obtained at the same time. Hybrid Raman erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (Raman-EDFAs) are available to improve optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) performance in optical transmission systems. The main goal of this paper is to investigate and compare the performance of a hybrid Raman-EDFA amplifier at different pumping configurations in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) infrastructure. For this purpose, a simulation model of a 16-channel 10 Gbps dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) transmission system with non-return-to-zero (NRZ) on-off keying (OOK) modulation and 100 GHz channel spacing was introduced. In this research, the authors evaluate the performance of the hybrid Raman-EDFA amplifier in terms of obtained global gain (GN), noise figure (NF) and bit-error- rate (BER). While choosing the configuration of the hybrid Raman-EDFA amplifier, the authors configure the different pump power dependence on gain together with the chosen length of the fiber section. BER values of received signals by use of the hybrid Raman-EDFA amplifier were obtained using different pumping powers and span lengths of erbium-doped fiber (EDF), dispersion compensating fiber DCF and single mode fiber (SMF) sections to find out the most suitable configuration ensuring received signal NRZ-OOK modulated signals BER quality below 1 × 10-9 for the proposed DWDM optical communication system.
