Factors Affecting Willingness to Fight for a Country in the Latvian and Russian-speaking Communities in Latvia
National Identities 2021

Comprehensive national defence is a security concept, which is based on whole-of-society involvement, therefore the will of society to defend the state is a precondition for it to be effective. The will to defend the state is a moral commitment arising from national identity. However, Latvia’s ethnic structure is setting specific circumstances for this security concept, due to the polarization of views among the Latvian and Russian-speaking communities. This paper addresses the question of how linguistic distinctions affect willingness to fight for a country and expands knowledge on identity patterns in an ethnically diverse society.
