Probability Analysis of the Fracture of Unidirectional Hybrid Composites in Tension
Mechanics of Composite Materials 1986
Juris Gutāns, Vitauts Tamužs

1. The initial rupture of LM fibers is unlikely in a hybrid composite containing HM and LM fibers, and defects from HM fibers are accumulated during the initial stage of fracture. The dispersed ruptures grow as a result of stress concentration. 2. The possible fracture variants are located between the two extreme cases: alternate rupture of HM and LM fibers -1, 2, 3, 4; rupture of only HM fibers -1, 3, 5, 7. 3. An algorithm was developed to search for the most likely variant of fracture and to calculate the strength and damage content of a hybrid composite. 4. The amount of damage to HM fibers in a hybrid composite is an order of magnitude greater than the amount of damage to HM fibers in a two-component composite. The hybrid strength effect obtained is negative. © 1986 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
