The arch bridge over the Lielupe River in Jelgava town was built in 1953 in the place of a temporary timber bridge built after World War II. Due to insufficient maintenance, fatigue and growing conventional traffic load, the bridge needs to be re-constructed and strengthened. The condition of the arched span structures as well the piers and abutments was found capable for appropriate reconstruction with necessary strengthening. The reconstruction includ the replacement of spandrel walls and sand infill with longitudinal ribs from reinforced high strength lightweight aggregates (HS LWA) concrete that leads to changes in the structural system by establishment of simple arch systems with expansion joints on piers. The set of reconstruction measure wills extend the lifetime of the bridge significantly.
