Anotācija The drinking water companies are responsible for producing and supplying safe, high quality water for costumers. According to the legislation of Latvian government the drinking water quality should meet the standard at the customer tap, therefore the supplier is forced to analyze water quality not only at the outlet from the treatment plant but in the distribution network as well. The grab sampling which is performed on a daily basis by the company showed no “red water” problems, although up to 70% cases of all complaints from the costumers concern the discoloration of drinking water in Riga city. In this work the Resuspension Potential method (RPM) and online monitoring were used in two distribution networks, Riga city (700 000 inhabitants) and the municipality of Adazi (8 000) in order to assess the discoloration risk in the networks and elucidate the shortcomings regarding turbidity and iron analyses defined in the legislation, which clearly showed inefficiency of the grab sampling from customer taps for controlling the risks of discoloration. In both case studies the applicability and efficiency of the unidirectional flushing (UDF) method was demonstrated.
