The paper addresses the issue of consumer citizenship education with the emphasis on the development of certain subject competences and skills at tertiary level. This is viewed in the context of integrative tendencies and interdisciplinary links. The focus is on joint planning of curriculum and course content by coordinating and integrating the contributions of specialists in different fields at Departments of Economics of higher education institutions.The concept of social innovation is analyzed both from a theoretical and practical perspective. The benefits of identifying, evaluating and documenting cases of social innovation are analyzed in terms of the development of students' decision making capacities, cognitive and communicative skills and the ability of learning to learn from real-life situations.
