The article discusses different approaches to classification of sound imitative words, reflects on sound iconic functions of phonemes and phoneme clusters, and presents the results of analysis of 120 English onomatopoeic words and corresponding Latvian and Russian counterparts in contrastive perspective. The analysis has been conducted with an aim to establish universal, relatively universal and language specific features of sound imitative words in three languages.
