Recently in the world, more and more observed growth in demand for renewable resources, including special attention is drawn to the natural fiber raw materials and their identifying opportunities for the use of both textile and non-textile products. At the moment one of the current sources of such resources is fiber hemp, which is highly productive, can be grown practically free of pesticides and other chemical use in relatively wide climatic range, is a raw material for various products - paper, textiles, composites and insulation materials. Latvian in the historical perspective hemp grown mainly of food needs, as well as other crop protection against pests. Only in years 2008 and 2009 was found the first fiber hemp sowing areas (250 ha in 2009). Pilot testing shows better tenacity and breaking elongation of fibers from hemp stems grown in Latvia compare with the same variety grown in Germany. But to create the appropriate specifications of fibres and shives applications, required many-sided hemp genotypes fraction studies and comparative analysis with the EU introduced varieties, farmed in Latvian climatic and soil conditions. The paper present’s a comparative study of results from testing in the year 2009 Latvian grown local genotype „Purini“ and commercial available ES registered industrial hemp variety „Bialobrzeskie” (Poland) fibres durability properties as well colour, lightness, long and short fibres contents. Keywords: hemp, variety, durability, long fibres contents
