Development of Vocabulary Skills on the Basis of Word-Frequency Analysis
Active Learning in Higher Education Proceedings of ALHE Intensive Programme 2005 in Riga Latvia 2006
Victors Ljumkis, Igors Ivaškins

There are two basic ideas running through the article. The first is that information about the statistical nature of vocabulary provides valuable guidelines for the teaching and learning of vocabulary. The second is that an analysis of frequencies distributions of words provides information about what vocabulary to focus on to acquire definite words and additional techniques for studying special vocabulary. As an example, the frequency distribution of word-forms in the typical article and the practical use of frequency list have been examined. A special computer program has been been written on the basis of commands in Visual Basic computer language. It can count and distribute the words and numbers in a text according to their frequencies of occurrences, i.e. from the most frequent words to the least frequent ones. The use of frequency lists represents an important up-to-date step to the technical English text analysis.
