Nowadays computer-based tutoring systems are taking over human-teacher role, and it is important to ensure system’s intellectual and adaptive functions in the form of system ability to analyze learners and to personalize the learning environment for each learner needs. It is important to conduct studies about a learner model as a main source for computerized tutoring system intellectual and adaptive functions. The thesis describes intellectual tutoring systems and their student models. Aim of the thesis is to identify connections between computer-based tutoring system intellectual and adaptive functions and student model data, and to define content of full student model to support these functions. The empirical part of the thesis contains development of software system “SM builder” for automatic generation of student model depending on required intellectual and adaptive functions, and describes RTU knowledge assessment system IKAS intellectual and adaptive function expansion with support of the new student model. IKAS new functionality is tested during three courses with 298 learners in total. Test results show that IKAS became adaptable and more useful for learners and the aim to turn IKAS into system that supports knowledge assessment and new knowledge acquisition is achieved. The thesis main results are complete student model acquisition, “SM builder” system development for student model automatic generation and RTU knowledge assessment system IKAS intellectual and adaptive function expansion with the new student model support. Main results of the thesis have been presented at 5 international conferences and 4 local conferences, as well as they are reflected in 13 scientific papers. The thesis includes introduction, 5 chapters and conclusions. It contains 119 pages, 67 figures and 32 tables in the main text, 118 titles large bibliography and 3 attachments.
