In the doctoral thesis, the properties of α-tricalcium phosphate based bone cements – setting and hardening processes, mechanical strength, phase composition, cohesion and injectability, as well as biocompatibility – are examined. The dependence of these properties on the composition of liquid phase of the cement and composition and preparation of solid phase of the cement is ascertained. Methodology describing how to control setting time, cohesion and injectability of the cement by adjusting the composition of liquid phase of the cement has been developed. By changing the parameters of liquid and solid phase of α -tricalcium phosphate based bone cement it is possible to adjust the cement properties for the uses requiring shorter or longer setting time, as well as for cement implantation by injection (minimally invasive implantation) or implantation as moldable putties. A number of original methods to investigate processes during calcium phosphate cement setting and hardening have been developed. In the literature review, information published about calcium phosphate cements is summarized (most of the information is published in period from 2000 to 2012). The literature review concerns the information about ceramic calcium phosphate bone repair materials (including calcium phosphate cements), factors that influence setting time, cohesion, injectability and biological properties of calcium phosphate cements. In the experimental part of the thesis materials, methods and equipment is described, the correlation between composition of α-tricalcium phosphate based bone cements and processes during setting and hardening is ascertained. The Doctoral thesis is written in the Latvian language, its volume is 129 pages. The thesis contains 57 figures, 25 tables, and 165 literature sources.
