Biomaterials based on calcium phosphates are very suitable for many medical applications due to their biocompatibility, bioactivity and osteoconductive properties in mammals body. The most common of them is hydroxyapatite, it is used as a biomaterial implant in orthopedic, maxillofacial surgeries and dentistry. Nowadays one of the most problems in implantation is the risk of infections or implant rejection by the body. To prevent an infection process, implants are covered with materials, which have biological properties. HAp does not show antibacterial properties. Several studies have shown that metal ions incorporated in HAp structure, can improve its physical, chemical, antibacterial and biological properties. Silver ions have antibacterial properties and due to that, silver has been used in biomedical fields for a long time. Silver ions shows antibacterial effect against more than 16 different types of bacteria and low concentrations are not toxic to mammals. Silver ions incorporatation in HAp structure could increase HAp antibacterial properties. The aim of the current study is to synthesize silver doped hydroxyapatite (HAp/Ag). HAp/Ag synthesis parameters were modified and effects of modified parameters on HAp/Ag phase composition, structural properties and surface morphology were characterized.
