In the Doctoral thesis the methods and technological processes of silver doped hydroxyapatite preparation from different raw materials were developed. Physical and chemical properties of obtained materials were determined and compared. Obtained material was used to prepare dense and porous scaffolds. Mechanical properties, phase composition and silver ion release kinetics were determined for ceramic silver doped hydroxyapatite scaffolds within one year period. Antibacterial effect depending on the scaffold preparation technology, silver content and high-temperature treatment was studied. For controlled drug delivery system development scaffolds were modified with sodium alginate and/or chitosan coatings and active pharmaceutical ingredients – lidocaine hydrochloride and dexamethasone sodium phosphate. The effect of polymer coating and scaffold preparation technology towards release kinetics of drugs was investigated. By varying the polymer coating types, drug introduction and scaffold preparation technology, controlled release drug delivery systems were obtained. Controlled drug release was achieved for 3 to 14 day period. In the literature overview, information regarding the period of time from 1964 to 2014 is summarized in areas including hydroxyapatite, substituted hydroxyapatites, their phase composition and properties, lidocaine hydrochloride and dexamethasone sodium phosphate, as well as drug delivery systems, their properties and development on the basis of hydroxyapatite. In the experimental part of the thesis, the used materials and equipment are described, and the interconnection between the preparation technology and properties of the silver doped hydroxyapatite scaffolds is established. Technological process scheme of silver doped hydroxyapatite is developed. Controlled drug delivery systems on the basis of silver doped hydroxyapatite are prepared and their properties evaluated. The Doctoral thesis is written in the Latvian language, its volume is 157 pages. The thesis contains 74 figures, 21 tables, 2 annexes, and 175 literature sources.
