It has been established that hydroxyapatite (HAp) is biocompatible and bioactive, thereby considered to be promising bone replacement material. Mg- and Sr-subtituted HAp could ensure faster and more efficient recovery of the damaged bone due to the positive effect of Mg and Sr ions on the formation of new bone. The main goal of our work is to evaluate the behaviour (i.e., degradation, ion release and apatite-forming ability) of dense, sintered Sr- and/or Mg-containing HAp ceramics in simulated body fluid (SBF).
