Influence of Anatase Powder Particle Size on the Properties of Sintered TiO2 Ceramics

Titania (TiO2) has been widely studied because of its unique optical and chemical properties in catalysis, photocatalysis, air purification, biomaterials etc. This material crystallizes mainly in anatase or rutile phase and exhibits different physical and chemical properties. Anatase to rutile phase transition occurs in temperature range of 350 °C to 1000 °C. During sintering process densification and grain growth occurs, which has large effect on further ceramic properties and technological applications. Particle size of raw material has a major effect on sintering of green compacts. In present work, bulk TiO2 ceramics were prepared by phase-transformation assisted sintering. The effects of the anatase powder particle size on sample sintering process and sintered ceramic phase transformation, microstructure, relative density were investigated. Further sample treatment in simulated body fluid (SBF) was accomplished for bioactivity assessment of sintered ceramic.
