Technology for creating porous calcium phosphate granules
Programme and Book of Abstracts of The Conference for Young Scientists in Ceramics (The Tenth Students' Meeting - SM-2013, and The Third ESR Workshop, COST MP904) 2013

Calcium phosphates (CaP) are widely used as implant materials. Implant materials are prepared in various forms – blocks, scaffolds, coatings, powders and granules, either dense or porous. Granular implant material has improved handling over block implants, because granules can accommodate any embodiment. Porous implants have improved tissue adhesion and bone ingrowth. Optimal pore size for implants is 100-200 μm. Technology for fabricating porous CaP granules by viscous slurry foaming with volatile pore former is presented. Ammonium hydrogen carbonate is used as pore former in viscous glycerol based CaP powder slurry. Effects of slurry composition on fabricated granule scale are assessed.
