There are a number of ways to recycle and dispose of wood ash. Before attempting any of these methods the ash must be safely handled, for example, by use of one of simplest handling - separation of coarse parts using sieve method. This study investigates the use of handled alumosilicate - wood ash with particles size under 60 μm in compositions with Illite clay to develop cementing material, like Roman cement, and low temperature porous ceramic products. The starting compositions for both cases includes raw illite clay 40-80 wt..% and wood ash 60-20 wt. % accordingly To accelerate the processes of cementing and sintering there are used also compositions with thermally and chemically treated clay. Samples cementing capability was tested after a 7 and 28 day’s holding in a wet environment. Compression strength was used for the assessment of cementing capacity as a criterion. Ceramic samples were developed by sintering at 700, 800 and 900 °C. For both cases there were bulk density, shrinkage and compressive strength detected, as well phases composition by XRD (model D8 Advance Bruker). and structure by SEM (Hitachi TM 3000). The following key findings could be made: clay-ash mixtures have weak cementing properties – the compressive strength max wert 2.7 MPa is achieved by 20% additional ash. Increase of ash content in compositions as well clay thermal or chemical processing is unlikely to be effective. The ceramic way is more perspective – the sintered ceramic product is porous and achieve compressive strength 20-25 MPa by sintering at 800-900ᵒC at bulk density 1.50-1.55 g/cm3.
