Electric energy systems are evolving into complex distributed systems with energy production and storage capabilities at the demand side and bidirectional energy and information links between the grid operator and entities connected to it. Demand Response systems, a subset of Demand Side Management systems, can flatten the energy demand peak by applying strategies such as rescheduling of energy consumption activities or using locally stored energy. The article presents an architecture of a Demand Response Management system and formulates one of its algorithms used for choosing the optimal set of energy consuming devices to be powered off during peak hours while respecting the energy consumer's energy saving preferences and minimizing the negative impact.
