Knowledge Society as a Factor of the Economic Growth
Management and Sustanible Development 2006
Līga Kamola, Viktors Nešpors

Lately, a number of new terms are increasingly used in scientific literature and press publications, such as globalisation, new economy, knowledge-based society, information society etc. Most frequently they are used as the basis for national, industrial or region development conceptions. In all these cases the interrelationship of these concepts is seldom analysed. Frequently the level of development of these processes in a specific territory is not taken into account and the desired level of development (the development level outside the specific territory) is passed for a real situation. These problems are topical for the Baltic States due to the relatively short period since the restoration of independence, the radical transition from one economic system to another, as well as the accession to the European Union, i.e. due to integration and globalisation processes. These are problems that are topical for all countries that are on the way to the accession to the European Union.
