Banking Trends in New Member States of the European Union: Case of Latvia

The recent financial turmoil has had large negative effects on banking sectors in all new Member States (NMS) of the European Union, especially in Baltic States. The analysis of retrospective statistical information in regard to the main bank performance indices was conducted in order to make the overall review of the financial situation in Latvian banking sector. Based on financial indices, the basic trends in Latvian banking are analyzed to make short predictions of the future development of the industry.
