Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is used for bone-tissue engineering, due to its bioactivity and osteoconductivity. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a hydrophilic polymer possessing excellent physical and mechanical properties and biocompatibility. In order to achieve the synergic effect of bioactivity of HAp and adjustable biodegradability of PVA, PVA/HAp microgranules were formed by spray drying process of the polymeric suspensions containing HAp particles synthesized in situ. Moreover, PVA was modified with succinic anhydride to introduce carboxylic acid residues that either can be modified with organic biologically active compounds or can chelate bioactive metallic ions on the surface of the HAp particles.
